Classic Video Game 'Rampage' Headed to Big Screen From New Line (Exclusive)
Who's up for a little Rampage? New Line Cinema has put into development an adaptation of the classic 1980s video game featuring apes and monsters destroying cities. John Rickard, who has acted as a co-producer on a wide range of New Line movies from A Nightmare on Elm Street and Final Destination to Horrible Bosses and next year's tentpole Jack the Giant Killer, will produce and is meeting with writers to develop a story for the project. The game comes from Midway Games, which was acquired by New Line's sister company Warner Bros. in 2009 for $33 million. The concept of the game revolves around a trio of mild-mannered humans who are mutated into a giant Godzilla-like lizard, a werewolf and a gorilla, respectively, and fight the military while destroying buildings. Players controlled the monsters and moved up levels when a city was destroyed. The project aims to take advantage of the title and the visuals of the game. New Line isn't usually in the tentpole business (the Lord of the Rings trilogy being the big exception) but the studio believes that technology has advanced enough that the possibility exists to make a smartly-budgeted monster movie in the vein and tone of Ghostbusters and Independence Day. 'Parks and Recreation's' Nick Offerman on Mustaches and Being Tackled by Robin Givens (Q&A)
The Hollywood Reporter: You're best known for Parks and Rec, but you've been a busy working actor for more than 14 years. What was your career like before the show?our editor recommends'Parks and Rec's' Nick Offerman Strips to Alpaca Shorts for New NBCU Green PSAs (Exclusive Video) Related Topics•The Race Nick Offerman: I'd been making a really nice living for about 10 years here in L.A. I always felt successful just doing that. I've been working steadily as an actor since around 1998. I wasn't well known in the public, but I was a dependable working journeyman. I was working more than all the people I knew from college and my Chicago theater community, so I didn't notice that I wasn't "successful" enough. When I got my job on Parks, it was so dreamy, kind of unfathomable. I didn't think a job that excellent could exist for me. THR: Is acting something you've had to work at, or does it come naturally? Offerman: I felt like I was pretty good at it, which is another way of saying that I was full of it. My dad always said I had a good line of BS, so I figured I'd make a good lawyer or actor. STORY: 'Parks and Rec's' Mike Schur and THR'S Top 50 Showrunners THR: What was your first SAG job? Offerman: A show called Angel Street for CBS, starring Robin Givens. Robin is as big as my pinky, and she had to, at one point in this episode, tackle me in an alley. It was filmed in Chicago. The show didn't last very long. THR: How have those years of journeyman work helped fine-tune your craft? Offerman: The biggest lesson I've learned is that there is absolutely no better training ground than the theater. And the most important thing I learned from working SAG jobs is simply ... patience. If you're an original thinker, you are going get told no a lot, and you have to be able to hear no many times from the bankers and trust that at some point, someone is going to recognize that you are an artist and not a can of soda. THR: How does it to feel to finally "arrive" at age 41? Offerman: I'm glad I took a long time to get here. If it had happened at a younger age, I probably would have self-destructed in some way. I'm barely hanging on as it is at my age now. You give an idiot a couple of dollars, and he and his money will soon be parted. THR: The writers have worked a lot of your interests, like woodworking, into your character. Is Ron Swanson a heightened version of you? Offerman: There's been a lot of opining about that, but it's like saying Homer Simpson is a heightened version of a human being. Ron is sort of an epic mythological character in a TV comedy. But if I were a set of paints, they would be using the same colors to paint Ron but in a much larger and bolder fashion. THR: How do you prepare for scenes? Offerman: It doesn't take much. Ron is always inside me, waiting to exact his righteous indignation. There's a little bit of my dad and grandfather and every school principal I've ever come in contact with in Ron -- people who have a pomposity about being an administrator. THR: OK, your mustache. Why do you think it's becoming such a talking point? Offerman: Sadly, our country has become so emasculated that a national audience can be astonished by a man merely growing whiskers, as though I were growing diamonds on my face. THR: You work with hilarious actors like Amy Poehler. Do you have any tricks to suppress laughter during filming? Offerman: I pretend I'm annoyed by how funny they are. Your brother or sister could be the most fantastic person in the whole world, but if they are being hilarious and everyone loves them, you can think, "Oh, God, barf." So I try to put myself in that head space -- "Oh, America loves you. You're so funny" -- and try to be annoyed by how talented they are. THR: Your wife, Megan Mullally, has been in several Parks episodes as Ron's insane ex. What's it like to work together? Offerman: It's a ridiculous dream. My wife happens to be probably the greatest working woman in comedy. I can't think of anyone who even approaches her achievements and her abilities. I feel like a college basketball player getting to play with Michael Jordan. Related Topics SAG Amy Poehler NBC Parks and Recreation Nick Offerman Awards Season Preview

Hot Short Film 'Rosa' Grabbing Hollywood's Attention (Video)
It's been a while since a short film has grabbed Hollywood's attention like Rosa, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi animated short from Spanish comic book artist Jesus Orellana. The featurette is getting attention from the tech and geek sites, and in the short time it's been online (less than 24 hours), it has crossed over into the mainstream, hitting even USA Today. Orellana works in the Spanish comic industry but harbors dreams of directing live action features. So what does he do? He creates an animated short. His logic is simple: live action costs money while animation can be done on the cheap. He taught himself the programs and spent every waking moment designing his movie from his home in Barcelona. And he did it, as he claims, with zero budget. Here's the description: Rosa is "an epic sci-fi short film that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where all natural life has disappeared. From the destruction awakes Rosa, a cyborg deployed from the Kernel project, mankind's last attempt to restore the earth's ecosystem. Rosa will soon learn that she is not the only entity that has awakened and must fight for her survival." The short has played at the Seattle International Film Festival, then SITGES, Screamfest, Toronto After Dark, among others. It hit the Web on Thursday. Orellana, managed by Scott Glassgold and Raymond Brothers of IAM Entertainment, is fielding interest from all the agencies and several producers, as well as a studio or two, although his goal right now is to turn Rosa into a live-action feature. Meet the Man Whose Tweet Brought Down Brett Ratner
Last Friday night, D.C. Douglas, an actor and voice-over specialist, took his girlfriend to a special screening of Brett Ratner's Tower Heistat the Hollywood's Arclight Cinemas. Little did Douglas know that Ratner's post-show question-and-answer session after the movie-and Douglas' reaction to it on Twitter-would put him at the center of a controversy that has funamentally changed the 2012 Academy Awards.our editor recommendsHoward Stern Defends Brett Ratner, Slams Hollywood As 'Loony' (Video) Eddie Murphy Out, Brett Ratner Deuces: Who Should Replace the Oscar Team? (Poll)Brett Ratner: What the Industry Is Saying Brian Grazer Replacing Brett Ratner as Oscar Producer (Exclusive) PHOTOS: Hollywood's Biggest Blunders The Hollywood Reporter tracked down Douglas, whose tweet noting that Ratner had said "Rehearsing is for fags" during the Q&A prompted the maelstrom of news coverage that eventually led to Ratner (and then host Eddie Murphy) stepping down from the Oscar telecast. PHOTOS: Oscar Hosts Through the Years Douglas tells THR that the second Ratner uttered the line in response to question about how he prepares a scene with actors, he and his girlfriend "exchanged a 'Did he really just say that?' look." PHOTOS: Hollywood's Memorable Mea Culpas Although Douglas believes Ratner intended the comment as a joke, there was nothing in the director's intonation or body language-no sarcasm in his voice, no knowing wink-to indicate to the audience he was kidding. "He's kind of a douche," Douglas recalls thinking to himself. Douglas was surprised there was no audience reaction to the comment during what was an otherwise "boring" interview, he says. "I kept waiting for someone to follow it up in the Q&A and when they didn't I went home and tweeted it." STORY: Brett Ratner's 10 Offensive Quotes That Ended in Oscar Trouble Here's what Douglas tweeted: "Just saw #TowerHeist followed by Q&A with Brett Ratner. VIDEOS: The Biggest Failed Jokes at the Academy Awards NY Mag's Vulture blog then ran an item based on Douglas' tweet, which prompted a smattering of other websites to pick up the story. When Ratner issued an apology on Monday, the story became huge. Academy president Tom Sherak initially defended Ratner but warned that another embarassing comment would not be tolerated. Then Ratner's interview with Howard Stern-in which he boasted of his sex life and "huge balls"-became public, and by mid-day Tuesday Ratner had informed the Academy that he was stepping down as producer of the Oscars. Murphy bailed as the host on Wednesday, with Brian Grazer named producer on Wednesday afternoon. This isn't the first time Douglas has been a player in a political controversy. In April 2010, he left a message on the Tea Party-affiliated group Freedomworks' voicemail criticizing the organization. An operative with the group publicized Douglas' voice-over work, resulting in GEICO dropping him from a series of internet commercials. Douglas responded by posting a satirical Tea Party PSA on YouTube. The story was subsequently featured onThe Joy Behar Show. Douglas continues to produce satirical YouTube commercials through his Tweaked Nipple Productions. Email: Andy.Lewis@thr.com Related Topics Brett Ratner Eddie Murphy Tower Heist
